INJURIES TO OUR PETS—SHOULD YOU SEE A LAWYER?

The short answer is, yes, but what he can do is limited.

When a person is involved in some kind of accident involving injury, that person is entitled to have his medical bills paid, lost wages compensated, and is entitled to an award for pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment in life, and other similar areas of compensation. However, a pet is entitled to none of that, except payment of medical bills. For animal dies, the owner is night entitled to the value of the pet, which is limited to the price paid for the pet. We as owners are not entitled to compensation for the emotional loss which is almost always involved at the death of the deer pet.

New Jersey law draws a very firm line between a person’s injuries and a pet’s injuries.
