Gary R. Backinoff
Over the past thirty-two years, Gary Backinoff has represented a diverse group of clients, including individuals, small businesses, families, corporations, partnerships, not-for-profit social service organizations, and governmental entities. Covering all types of cases such as residential and commercial real estate, land use (planning and zoning), estate planning and administration, affordable housing, and commercial litigation.
Prior to becoming an attorney, Gary directed the Mercer County Citizen Advocacy Program to advance the opportunities and civil liberties of individuals with developmental disabilities. In this position, he coordinated the efforts of over fifty volunteers engaged in direct service and promoted the first community based group homes in Mercer County.
While in law school, Gary worked at the United States Department of Justice, New Jersey Department of the Public Advocate, and, immediately after law school, became a Deputy Attorney General of New Jersey. During his tenure at the Attorney General’s office, he primarily represented the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency and his work focused on commercial litigation, development, and financing of affordable housing.
Gary entered the private practice of law in 1985 in association with the small but prominent law firm of Ridolfi, Friedman and Frank in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Initially, his core clients included builders, developers, property managers, and owners of property (profit and non-profit organizations). His practice expanded into serving a variety of businesses and individuals, including large companies, family owned businesses, and formation of business entities. As he grew more successful, he has continued representation and volunteer services to several not-for-profit organizations serving housing and social service needs of Mercer County residents. More particularly, Gary was the President, served on the Board of Directors, and is currently legal counsel to The ARC Mercer, Inc. and currently participates as a Board Member of Project Freedom, Inc.
Gary’s methodology in working with clients is to listen carefully to help identify his clients’ goals and then work cooperatively with his clients to develop a course of action to achieve those goals. In addition to the above-referenced practice areas, in the last fifteen years, Gary again expanded his practice to include estate planning and administration. This area of practice has been important in helping individuals and business clients plan for the families’ futures and succession in their businesses. Gary has represented many individuals, families, and businesses for several decades, assisting with transitions between parents, children, and grandchildren.
